Monkees to play N.O.D.

Wiess social coordinator Evan Cone announced this past Friday at the Wiess party that the 1960s band, The Monkees, will play Wiess' N.O.D. this year. Cone also surprised the Rice community by adding that the whole affair will be moving to the Rice Stadium.

When asked why The Monkees and the change of location, Cone noted the fact Wiess was "sick of cleaning up the puke from the other colleges" and that The Monkees' clean image will appeal to a wider spectrum of Rice students. "I want those people with purity scores in the upper sixties here, damn it -- we're sick of scaring them away," Cone said.

A further reflection of changing times is Wiess' attempt for mass appeal with the theme. Cone continued to announce the 1995 theme as "Spankin' the Monkey."

The approval to move the affair to the stadium was approved by Ken Hatfield after getting the athletic department "all the money ... all the money." Rice President Malcolm Gillis grudgingly approved only after the promise of moving his 400 red monkeys to the Student Center.

The move will occur three days before the affair so that they can adapt to their new environment. "The monkeys must adjust to the pressure of a foreign environment such as the Student Center," yapped Gillis.

Christy Hard, pub manager, believes such assimilation on a pub night is possible. "For the Rugby team, it's just more meat in the market; plus all the sweating and crowd-shoving will make the Pub just like old times."

Others are quick to differ. Freshmen women are quite upset. One complaint is that the new female population will miss out on their one year to get all the attention and beer -- not share it with a bunch of primates.

Further complaints by the half-female class prompted the RPC to form a subcommittee of the existing Spirit and Morale Committee to better deal with the bitterness. The committee is to be headed by sophomore women, who in the words of one anonymous RPC member "can best identify and empathize with the current freshman class frustrations."

In related news, the Monkees are the first real band to play for Rice since They Might Be Giants played in 1991.

Student response has caused an internal RPC coup d'etat . Impressed with Cone's abilities, the RPC added him as a third co-president, leaving more time for Ryan Levy to further derange Will Rice freshmen with disillusions of O-year.
