FRIDAY, SEPT. 8

* Deadline for add/drop without fee, 5 p.m.

* Getcheroxoff -- Lovett shows the Star Wars trilogy, newly remastered with THX sound. Free admission, free food, free alcohol, free soft drinks. Star Wars starts at 7 p.m., Empire Strikes Back at 9:15, Return of the Jedi at 11:45.

* Volleyball vs. Utah, 7:30 p.m., Autry Court.

* An "Evening of Contemporary Dance" at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. 8 p.m. Free. 520-3290.

* The Houston Symphony opens its 82nd season with "superstar pianist" Andre Watts playing Tchaikovsky, Christoph Eschenbach conducting. 7:30 p.m. at Jones Hall. 227-ARTS.

* Ninth in the line of succession for a dukedom, an ambitious noble systematically kills the eight men in his way. (They're all played by Alec Guinness!) The movie is Kind Hearts and Coronets , and in 1949 Britain it was considered shocking. You can see it today at the Media Center, Entrance 8. 7:30 p.m.; $3.50 for Rice students. The Media Center calendar is out at the colleges -- it's worth a look.

* Egyptian Festival, sponsored by St. Mark Coptic Egyptian Church. Egyptian foods and crafts. Fri. 6 - 10, Sat.11 - 10, Sun. noon - 7. $2/person. 669-0311.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 9

* SRC presents the Early '80s party 10 - 2 tonight, Sid commons; free. Period dress is encouraged.

* The Chinese Student Association presents Red Dust and Born Coward at Chem Lec. The first movie starts at 6 p.m. Free.

* GetAway presents another off-campus cultural activity: the first 3-D IMAX feature film, Wings of Courage with Val Kilmer. Meet at the Sallyport at 11 a.m. Call Paul, 630-8709, or Carrie, 796-2331, or check out http://is.rice.edu/~tpoiii/getaway.html .

* Volleyball vs. Southern, 7:30 p.m., Autry Court.

* Phantom of the Opera , in a 1925 silent film incarnation, shows up at the Media Center with a brand-new soundtrack. Considered by some to be one of the best horror movies ever made. $3.50 for Rice students; 7:30 & 9:30 p.m.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 10

* Phantom again, at 7:30 p.m.

* The curator of "Seductive Matter," which opened last week at the Rice Art Gallery in Sewall Hall, will talk about the exhibition. 2 p.m., 309 Sewall Hall. Free.

MONDAY, SEPT. 11

* Barber Day at the Student Center. Get your hair cut for $5. 10 - 5 in front of the Grand Hall.

* SA meeting, 10 p.m., Kelley Lounge. See politicos in their native habitat -- maybe they'll even have new hair cuts!

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 13

* She's shown up on MTV and the Comedy Channel. Now comedian Renee Hicks, dubbed "bold, beguiling and bald" by her promoters, plays the Student Center. (Talk about a career boost!) 9 p.m.; free!

* Volleyball vs. Texas Southern, 7:30 p.m., Autry Court.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 14

* Paris, Texas at the Media Center. I think I've heard something good about this, but I don't really remember. Go anyway. 7:30 p.m.; $3.50 for Rice students.

NOW SHOWING...

* Sammy's Late Nite opens on Monday. Cheap eats from 9 p.m. to midnight. Grand opening coming soon.

* Set your roommate up for Screw Yer Roommate, next Saturday ...

* At the Rice Art Gallery, Sewall Hall: "Seductive Matter," 37 contemporary sculptures by 11 artists. Tues. - Sat. 11 - 5, Thursdays until 9 p.m. Free.

* At the MFA: The Paine Webber Collection of Contemporary Masters and Poussin: Works on Paper.
