Golf team captures first in California
The team finished tied with the University of California at Berkley after the three rounds of competition but won the event by a tie breaker.
College golf meets are scored by totalling the top four individual scores after each round for the five-member team.
Both Rice and California ended the tournament with 878 strokes. The team's fifth place golfer in the final round, Tim Carlson (76), edged California's David Lee (77) by one stroke to give the Owls the title.
Rice and California were followed by the University of Nebraska (879), the University of Utah (881) and the University of Wyoming (881). The host team, the United States Air Force Academy, finished sixth.
David Lawrence was the team's top finisher with a score of 217, earning him sixth place overall.
Carlson's three-round total of 219 placed him 11th. John Lawrence also shot 219 and finished 13th based on tie breakers. Kalani Kiaaina (228) and Jason Stevens (231) finished 60th and 70th respectively in the field of 120.
Head Coach Jim Castañeda was impressed with his team's performance.
"I am really happy," he said. "There were several state universities there that were very good. It was a good field."
David Lawrence agreed with Castañeda.
"We were really happy with everyone's performance," he said. "Me, John and Tim all played very well. It was Jason's first tournament, and he came really came through."
Next on the agenda for the team is a trip to Missouri.
On Oct. 2 the squad will travel to Columbia to participate in the Missouri Bluff Intercollegiate.
This week the players are competing against each other for the final two spots on the team.
A five-round qualifier will determine who will join John Lawrence, David Lawrence and Carlson.
The season also includes two trips to Hawaii, a visit to Monterrey, Mexico, and two tournaments in California.
