* Baker Blues Party. 10 p.m. - 2 a.m. Grady Gaines and the Texas Upsetters play the blues while you enjoy bourbon mixed drinks, beer, cigars and food. Baker quad.

* See the Rice Players' production of Marvin's Room , a comedy about a woman dying of leukemia. This is a comedy that Rice Players director Sandy Havens calls a "wonderfully humorous, warm, wise story. Too good to be missed." 8 p.m. Hamman Hall. Students and senior citizens $4. * Wiess One-Acts presents: "Words, Words, Words"; "Variation on the Death of Trotsky"; "A Dopey Fairy Tale"; "The Tangled Snarl." 8 p.m. Wiess College Commons. $3 for guests and $2 for students.

* IRIE TIME performs "Rockin` Reggae and Soca" at the Calypso Restaurant in Rice Village (5555 Morningside). 8-11 p.m. No cover.

* Fifteenth annual Southwest Jazz Ballet at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. 8 p.m. See Saturday entry.

* The Media Center runs A Nous La Liberté and Playtime back to back. A Nous La Liberté shows at 7:30 p.m. and pokes fun at the technological revolution and its effects on the modern world. A tramp becomes the head of an industrial empire and then wishes to return to his former life as a tramp. At 9:15 p.m., the Media Center presents Playtime , a comedy about Jacques Tati's famous character "Mr. Hulot" and a group of American tourists trying to be on time for an appointment in a modern Paris that is unrecognizable because of all the glass and steel skyscrapers.

* Casey N. Blake, director of American Studies at Indiana University, lectures on the relationship between art and politics at 3 p.m. Sewall Hall, room 305. Free. Sponsored by Rice's Center for the Study of Cultures. Call x2770 for more info.

* Like Water for Chocolate , winner of the Ariel, the Mexican version of the Oscar, shows at 7:30 and 9:45 p.m. at the Rice Media Center. Director Alfonso Arau uses magic realism to portray the simple love story of Tita, a woman who expresses herself through her cooking, and her suitor.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5

* Stalker shows at the Rice Media Center at 7:30 p.m. The story centers around "the Stalker," who leads a Writer and Professor on a journey through the Zone, a combination industrial wasteland/primeval forest to the Room. The Room is supposed to have transportative powers, but the trek leaves the men at a nihilistic impasse where faith is the only answer to life outside of the Zone.
