NEWS IN BRIEF: Cable rebate

To compensate students for the inconvenience resulting from the prolonged cable installation process, the university will refund a portion of the annual cable fee to each resident. Phonoscope Cable will offer an installation fee waiver for premium services.

The rebate on this year's cable service, $4.05, will be credited on the December Cashier's Office statements. The money will come "at no cost to the university," Residential Colleges Manager Bob Truscott said. He said that Rice would not be billed for September cable service since cable was not active in all the colleges during that month. The rebate is possible as a result of these savings.

Truscott said that Vice President for Finance and Administration Dean Currie and Vice President for Student Affairs Zenaido Camacho decided to refund the amount as a result of student complaints about the delayed service.

Phonoscope will also offer a waiver of its $15 installation fee for premium services through Oct. 15. Students who have already paid the installation fee will receive a credit of $15 plus tax on their next bill.
