Men's soccer falls to UT

by Chuck Whitten

The men's club soccer team was blown out by the University of Texas 7-0 last Saturday in Austin after struggling to contain the Longhorn's offensive attack.

The loss dropped the Owls to 1-2 in the Texas Collegiate Soccer League.

Rice lost its opener to Lamar University but defeated the University of Houston 4-3 on Sept. 16th.

Early in the first half, Texas forced Rice to drop back into a defensive shell and blasted shot after shot at a defense that was unable to clear the ball out of the box.

The Texas offense was rarely forced back into their own territory and opened up a 3-0 lead by the end of the first half.

Texas scored four more goals in the second half as the Longhorns were able to push the ball into Rice's defensive box. UT utilized a quick offense and usually had two or three open options against the severely outmanned Rice defense.

Rice was unable to launch an effective counter-attack and was forced into a defensive pace for most of the game.

Rice will attempt to rebound on the road against the University of North Texas tomorrow.

The Owls follow that game with a match against the University of Texas-Arlington on Sunday.
