Men's CC finishes fourth behind UH

by Ed Feng

Senior Jeff Lewis sprinted away for first place in a hotly-contested men's race at the Rice Invitational held last Saturday.

Senior Luis Armenteros finished close behind Lewis, taking fourth place.

Freshman Jeff Edmonds, junior Jamie DeMahy, freshman Ray Castillo and junior Dan Brooks finished in a clump at 27th, 28th, 31st and 32nd.

The Rice men took fourth overall with a total score of 89 points, trailing the University of Houston, who won the meet with 50 points.

The places of the top five runners count toward the team score.

"I started in the middle of the pack, but moved my way up to the front to take the lead with a mile and a half to go," said Lewis.

"It came down to the last hundred meters. When a guy came up on my back, I started my kick."

Lewis won by two seconds in 20:07.

The course covered a one-mile loop, which was run four times.

The four-mile course started at the intramural field by Sid Richardson College and formed a loop between the tennis courts and Autry Court.

The runners then looped by Cameron Field and the track stadium before starting the loop over again.

"It was a great spectator course because you could stand in one place and see the entire race," said junior Adam Reiser.

"It was exciting to have the winner," said Coach John Warren about the race.

"I also thought that Luis ran a great race to come in fourth. Now we just need to close the gap between our second and third runners. That pack needs to finish closer to Jeff and Luis."

"The cold front really helped the conditions on Saturday," said Lewis, commenting on the cross-country meet conditions.

"Since they didn't mow the grass, the long grass made the course slower."

This weekend, the team will run at the Texas-San Antonio Invitational, but Coach Warren plans to train through this meet in preparation for bigger meets which occur later in the season.

"The A&M meet in three weeks will be a really serious meet," he said. "Then we're starting to get into the meat of the season."
