Swimming hosts SWCs
The Aggies' men's team swept all nine events and won with a 106-58 score. The women's team was led by Carrie Covington who easily won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.44. She beat her nearest Aggie competitor by three seconds.
It was not Covington's best time in the event.
She said, "I have swam better and was surprised that I won easily."
A&M's women's team took the other eight events and won 104-54. Last year A&M finished third, just ahead of Rice in the conference meet.
This year the meet schedule was moved up a month, so the teams didn't have as much time to prepare.
According to Covington, the team was "feeling pretty antsy because [it] got pummeled" and hoped to do much better in its next meet.
"We all have high goals this year and are trying to chalk this one up to experience," she said.
In the team's next meet with A&M, it has set the goal of defeating the Aggies without counting the diving points.
The highlight of the meet for the Rice teams was the exhibition co-ed 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Owl team of Steve Quance, Aaron Mullins, Covington and Cory Teague barely won with a time of 1:32.46 over the Aggies' 1:32.64.
Cory Teague swam the anchor leg to pull out the win.
The team hosts the SWC Fall Swim Relays today at 4 p.m. at the Rice Pool. All SWC schools with swim teams will participate.
