Men's cross country team finishes 9th at A&M meet
The University of Texas-San Antonio took the overall title.
Senior Jeff Lewis led the team with a 19th-place finish while junior Luis Armenteros followed in 36th place.
Rounding out the top-five Rice runners were freshman Jeff Edmonds in 56th place, junior Jamie deMahy in 69th place and freshman Ray Castillo in 86th place.
Junior Dan Brooks, usually one of the top five runners, did not compete at the meet.
"The bright spot of this meet was that our top five guys all ran their best times for five miles," Coach John Warren said.
The men's team finished with 266 points in the large meet, only 13 points behind Southwest Conference rival the University of Houston.
"We have a really good chance of beating [Houston] at conference," said Warren, referring to the SWC Championship Meet to be held on Monday.
Warren expects Southern Methodist University and Baylor University to fight it out for the title while Texas A&M will most likely finish third.
He sees Houston and the University of Texas as the team's toughest competitors for fourth.
"At the beginning of the season, the district poll picked us to finish seventh out of eight teams," Warren said.
"Now we're seriously in contention for fourth. We're definitely running at or above our preseason expectations."
Warren was quick to praise deMahy and Castillo's excellent performances so far.
Looking forward to the conference meet, Warren expects Edmonds to run even better than at A&M and also expects Brooks to possibly break into the top five.
The conference meet will be held on a Monday, mainly because the race will be run on a golf course.
Since race officials couldn't reserve the course over the weekend, Monday was the only possible day, under NCAA rules, to have the meet.
