SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Swimming hosts SWC relays
The Rice men's team finished fifth with 35 points and the women's team finished fourth with 41. Both teams were hampered since there are no one competed in the diving competition at the University of Houston.
The Rice women's team claimed first in two of the relays. In the 200-yard fly, Corey Teague, Amy Ferranti, Carrie Bowden and Ginny Farmer finished in 1:44.88, almost four seconds in front of the pack.
The team of Hilary Grabe, Heather Draper, Julie Birch and Cory Teague finished less than half a second in front of Texas in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:46.95.
The women's team duals Texas in Austin tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. It will then rejoin the men's team at the Rice pool for meets against Louisiana State University and Southern Methodist University on Oct. 27-28.
