SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Women's soccer faces UT

The women's soccer team was in action last Sunday at Austin College. The team dominated the game and routed Austin 5-0.

Junior captain Sarah Newton scored from her inside halfback position in the first half. The other goal of the half was scored by senior Erin Benson.

Ellen Lansden, Rice's first-half goalkeeper, saw very little action as the majority of the play was on Austin's defensive third of the field.

The domination continued in the second half as Erika Jacobs, Rice's goalkeeper in the second half, never touched the ball.

Newton had three second-half goals for a total of four and a final score of 5-0.

"The team played very well and up to expectations," sophomore Amy Pita said.

Tomorrow evening, Rice takes on University of Texas in Austin. Texas didn't have a women's club soccer team last year.

"We're not quite sure what to expect, but we've heard they have a pretty strong team and are expecting a challenge," Pita said.

Tomorrow's game is the last regular season game for Rice.

The Owls are guaranteed a bid in the postseason regional tournament, but with last week's win against Austin and with a good outcome tomorrow, they hope to earn a good seed in the tournament.
