SPORTS NOTEBOOK: WAC sets baseball format

The Western Athletic Conference announced that it will have a three-division baseball alignment when the expanded conference begins play for the 1997 baseball season.

Each division will have four teams since Colorado State University, Southern Methodist University, the University of Texas-El Paso and the University of Tulsa do not have baseball teams.

Rice will be grouped with former Southwest Conference foe Texas Christian University, the University of New Mexico and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

One of the other divisions groups the Air Force Academy, the University of Wyoming, Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.

The final division contains San Diego State University, the University of Hawaii, Fresno State University and San Jose State University.

The teams will play each division foe every season and will face two teams from each of the other two divisions for three games each.

The WAC also announced a six-team playoff. The playoff teams will be the three group champions and three at-large representatives.
