SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Sailing wins first title ever
The team picked up its only first-place victory in recent history. Five teams from the Southwest Conference participated.
Weather conditions on Galveston bay were perfect for sailing with strong breezes and pleasant weather.
The wind was blowing between 10-20 knots and picked up as the day went on. Early on, the sea was pretty calm, but towards the end of the day the waves got bigger and made for some exciting sailing.
Rice sailors finished first overall with a first place win in the "B" division and a strong second in the "A" division. Baylor University was close behind to get a second overall. Other teams in attendance included Texas A&M University, the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University.
Intercollegiate regattas in Texas are commonly raced using 420s. A 420 is a dinghy 4.2 meters (12 feet) long, with a main sail and a smaller sail known as a jib.
The team is made up of members of the Rice University Sailing Club, sponsored by the Office of Student Activities. It is open to all undergrads able to swim and with a strong interest in sailing.
