Men's cross country claims sixth
Southern Methodist University captured the team title.
Adam Reiser led the team with a 25th place finish.
Teammates Luis Armenteros and Stormy Stuberbeille placed 25th and 28th, respectively.
Jamie deMahy and Jeff Lewis rounded out the top five in 40th and 43rd.
Lewis, who has been the top runner for the team in most meets this year, was hampered by a stomach virus.
Reiser and Stuberbeille boosted the team with exceptional races.
Cross country Coach Jon Warren said, "This is the tip of the iceberg of their talent."
Cross country becomes a true team sport at large meets because teammates often work together to move up in the standings.
"I worked with Stormy for most of the race," Reiser said.
The meet was run at Western Oaks Golf Course in Waco, which offers many grueling hills for the runners.
"It's so hilly that you can never really establish a rhythm," Reiser said.
Warren, who previously ran for Rice and has been running cross country for over 15 years, described the course as one of the toughest in the state.
At the start of the season, the Rice team was picked to finish sixth or seventh in the conference, so Warren expressed satisfaction with the result.
"We only finished sixth, but it was a much more promising race than the place indicates," he said.
At the meet, Dan Brooks was awarded the Academic All-Southwest Conference award for his scholarly achievement.
"It was the bright spot of an otherwise dreary morning," Brooks said.
The team will next run at the district meet, which will be held in two weeks at Texas A&M University.
Of the 32 teams in the district, the top two will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship meet.
Cross country powerhouse University of Arkansas will most likely capture one of those spots, while SMU is a strong contender for the other.
Although Warren doesn't expect the team to qualify, he believes Lewis has a chance to claim one of the at-large spots that go to the top runners on the non-qualifying teams.
