Women's CC takes third

by Alex Chapman

The Rice women's cross country team ran to a solid but disappointing third place finish at Monday's Southwest Conference Championship. Defeating them were Southern Methodist University and Baylor University, the same two teams that finished ahead of them at the Baylor Invitational on this same course earlier in the year.

Leading the way for the Owls was Stacy Swank, who finished ninth in the field of 50. Rounding out the scoring were Katy Eklof (12th), Alex Gajewski (17th), Shaquandra Roberson (19th) and Sheila Madigan (30th).

Running but not part of the official scoring were Heather Howard (31st)and Kari Vigerstol (32nd).

"I don't think we ran as well as we should have. But even if we did, we might still have finished third. Baylor and SMU ran as well as they're ever going to run," Gajewski said.

The next meet will be the District Championship next weekend.

The Owls must secure second in order to advance to nationals, a task which will be difficult. That is not their only goal, however. "We want to pass Baylor," Gajewski said.
