Swimming has strong showing vs. SMU
The men's team lost to SMU by the score of 116-87 while the women fell 109-93.
For the men's team, Steve Quance and Alex Fuller both captured victories in freestyle events.
Quance won the 50-yard freestyle sprint in a time of 21.71 seconds.
He was followed by teammate Grayson Morris, who finished in 22.37 seconds.
The men also dominated the 500-yard freestyle event. Fuller finished first with a time of 4:55.88 and was followed less than a second behind by Josh Kimmel, who finished in 4:56.60.
Dave Stigant was the only other Rice swimmer to win.
He took the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.40, beating the SMU competitor by just under two seconds.
SMU's Ryan Berube set a new Rice Pool record in the 400-yard individual medley with a finishing time of 4:02.57, beating the next finisher by more than 11 seconds.
The Rice women's team started off well as the relay team of Cory Teague, Carrie Bowden, Robin Davidson and Carrie Covington won the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:47.05.
This was a strong three seconds in front of the second-place SMU team, which finished in a time of 1:50.66.
The women then lost their next two events.
Covington came through in the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 24.46 to keep Rice in the competition.
SMU then took the next five women's events, virtually putting Rice out of the competition coming into the final two events.
Rice did win these as Kirsten Nagle won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.06.
The relay team of Julie Birch, Ginny Farmer, Covington and Teague took the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.82.
This wasn't enough, however, to even up with SMU.
The men's team travels to Northeast Louisiana this Saturday.
The women have the week off.
