Women's soccer heads to playoffs after 4-3 loss to University of Texas
It was the first time that the Rice women's team has faced the Longhorns on the soccer field.
Rice started strong with high spirits that were quickly deflated when UT scored the first goal of the game.
Rice matched this as captain Sarah Newton scored right after the 10-minute mark.
Coming from the offensive midfield position, she finished on a left-footed shot.
The rest of the half, however, was mostly UT as they scored three more goals to make the halftime score 4-1.
"We came out really strong [to start], but lost our momentum as the half progressed," Sophomore Amy Pita said.
The Rice team clearly dominated play in the second half.
About midway through, Newton scored her second goal to bring the score to 4-2.
Although the team had momentum, they could not finish for most of the rest of the half.
With less than five minutes left, Pita stepped up from her left fullback position on an overlap run to receive the assist from Allison Frazier and score Rice's third and final goal.
Pita's goal elevated the team's intensity, but they couldn't quite even the score.
Regarding the goal, Pita said, "it was nice to do something to pick the team up."
With the UT game, Rice finished up their regular season with four wins and four losses.
Rice hopes to carry the momentum from their second-half performance into the Regional tournament that begins Saturday in Waco.
They have received a bye in the first round and will take on either Baylor University or Lamar University in the second round. Baylor defeated Rice 3-0 earlier this year.
