G. Love subs for Blues Traveler

by Chris Sanders

For those looking forward to the Blues Traveler show this Sunday, the bad news is their concert has been canceled.

The good news is that their opening act and HORDE touring partner G. Love and Special Sauce has been moved over to the Satellite Lounge and up the marquee to headline.

G. Love and Special Sauce is a difficult band to pigeonhole, with a hybrid style combining elements of traditional blues and New Orleans funk with faint hints of rap.

According to producer Jim Dickerson, "G. Love is a mutant beyond race and region. A complex root system traveling in space and time, a simultaneous evolutionary step forwards and backwards."

His music is somewhat less complicated, but by no means simplistic. The instrumentation is sparse and rhythmic, with more syncapated comping than melody, and is punctuated by improvised solos.

With acoustic bassist Jimmy Prescott and trap drummer Jeffery Clemens, guitarist and lead vocalist G. Love changes familiar vamps, adds a filtered vocal track and comes out with a sound reminiscent of his street-corner beginnings.

Riding on their successful singles from their self-titled album, most notably "Cold Beverage," "Blues Music" and "Shooting Hoops," their newest album Coast to Coast Motel (Okeh) continues the tradition with the single "Kiss and Tell" and an assortment of blues jams ("Everybody," "Soda Pop").

Tickets for Sunday's show at the Satellite Lounge are available through TicketMaster.
