BAKER INSTITUTE INAUGURAL CONFERENCE: Discussions May Include Events in Bosnia, Kashmir
Each of the three panel topics fits the theme for the conference, "Foreign Policy Challenges at the End of the Century." All discussions will be moderated by Marvin Kalb, a TV journalist from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
Kalb will introduce the panel members at each discussion; a few will make brief introductory remarks. Kalb will then begin the discussion with a question posed to each of the panelists.
Near the end of the two-hour discussions, written questions will be taken from the audiences. The design of Stude Concert Hall makes oral questions from the audience impossible to televise.
Panel I
Panel I, on economic reform in Russia and China, will include foreign ministers Alexander Bessmertnykh of Russia and Uffe Elleman-Jensen of Denmark Students may also recognize new Anthropology Professor Ben Lee among the panelists..
Panel II
The second panel's topic is "Politico-Military Factors and the Future of Warfare." There will be commentary from panelists general Colin Powell, former Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, former foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher of Germany and Ralph Beigleiter of CNN.
Djerejian said that this conference will cover warfare after the Cold War, and he predicts that United Nations peacekeeping operations, nuclear weapons proliferation and nuclear terrorism will probably be brought up.
Panel III
Finally, cultural, ethnic and religious factors in international affairs will be discussed in the third panel session. Djerejian said that public policy studies often overlook the importance of the very factors that have become even more important since the end of the Cold War. "These are fundamental aspects of both individual and national lives," he said.
Students may recognize History professor Richard Smith among panelists on this topic.
Djerejian predicts that both Bosnia and Kashmir, with their conflicts between Muslims and Hindus, will be discussed in this session.
