BAKER INSTITUTE INAUGURAL CONFERENCE: Tickets Distributed Through Clubs, Reps, Classes

by Kate Hallgren

The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy made student tickets available on Monday and Tuesday; the number issued was determined by how much space was left over after faculty responded to their invitations.

There were 200 tickets given to students for the opening ceremonies and first session, 245 for the second panel discussion and 288 for the third.

Baker Institute undergraduate representatives at each college will distribute the tickets for their colleges, and the Graduate Student Association will be responsible for distributing tickets to graduate students.

The Baker Institute has extended invitations to elected student leaders such as presidents of the colleges and to some groups on campus such as the Black Student Association. Also, students enrolled in classes pertaining to a panel topic (such as POLI 378 -- National Defense) were invited to that discussion, as well.

Aside from the broadcast over Rice TV available to on-campus students, the Duncan Recital Hall in Alice Pratt Brown Hall and the Kyle Morrow Room on the third floor of Fondren Library will have the conference on big-screen TVs.

With 133 members of international, national and local media also covering the discussions, students who just want to catch the highlights should have ample opportunities to do so.

"Students will see things in local papers as well as national magazines, U.S. News & World Reports, for example," said Calvin Preece, administrative coordinator for the Baker Institute.
