Women's soccer takes third in Waco

by Matthew Chrisman

The women's club soccer team defeated Lamar University but fell to Baylor University and the University of Texas to finish third in last week's regional club soccer tournament held in Waco.

Earlier in the season, the team lost to Baylor 3-0, and it repeated this performance in the first game of the tournament.

Rice, playing two players short, held Baylor scoreless for most of the first half.

The full Baylor team was able to score a goal toward the end of the half.

Baylor scored two more goals in the second half, bringing the score to 3-0.

Although the Baylor team played very strong, it didn't totally dominate the Owls.

Rice's defense played very well, but the offensive output was poor.

Baylor had many more shots on goal than Rice.

In the second game of the tournament the Owls once again came out strong in the first half, holding the same UT that beat them earlier in the year to a 0-0 halftime deadlock.

In the second half, UT dominated. The final score was 2-0.

In its final game, the Rice team faced Lamar, who posed more of a challenge than the team expected.

The first half was marred by an apparent Rice goal that was disallowed by the officials.

Disheartened, the Owls came out flat to start the second half.

They were able to bounce back toward the end of the game as sophomore Amy Clapowski scored off a pass from freshman Kindra Welch.

The game ended with a 1-0 Rice victory.

As was apparent from the lack of scoring, offensive execution was Rice's primary fault.

Overall, the team did not improve its play or up its intensity for the tournament.

The outcomes were the same as the regular season outcomes against Baylor, UT and Lamar.

Rice beat the team it should have but could not overcome the odds and beat Baylor or UT.

Baylor won the tournament and will go on to nationals next week.

The team finished the year with a 4-4 regular season record and a 1-2 postseason record.

"It was a good season, but disappointing because it looked like it could have been so much better," sophomore Amy Pita said.
