Men's swimmers split in Louisiana

by Matthew Chrisman

The men's swim team faced Northeast Louisiana University and Delta State University in two dual meets this Saturday at NLU.

It defeated Delta State 70-35 but fell to NLU 73-22.

Freshman Dave Stigant's performance was the highlight of Rice's showing.

He won the 200-yard backstroke with an impressive time of 1:56.54, beating his nearest opponent by almost two seconds.

Also turning in a strong performance for the team was freshman David Henry. He finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:57.55.

He also claimed third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.47, behind NLU's Bill Fegley.

Both Head Coach Kris Wing-enroth and Assistant Coach Brian Smith were very positive about the team's performance thus far.

Smith said, "We've put in the hard work and are set up for a good season; now we just need to follow through."

He felt that the times at last week's meet were good but not as fast as possible.

The team had been training very hard, and many of the swimmers were physically tired from the work.

"I am still very pleased with the meet -- the way we approached it and the good efforts," he said.

Wingenroth said, "The season is going very well. I feel real good about the training we've done."

Last week the men's and women's teams switched training cycles to prepare for the Reveille Invitational in College Station this weekend.

The bright spot of the season has been the team's relays, specifically the medley relays.

According to the coaches, the team is in a good position for this weekend's meet and for the Southwest Conference meet that will be held Feb. 15-17.
