SPORTS NOTEBOOK: LaRocca, Hogan honored


Two Rice student-athletes have been selected to receive awards.

Quarterback Josh Larocca was named a Honda Scholar Athlete. The award is goven to outstanding student-athletes competing in Division I football.

The program selects nine athletes from selected conferences and major independent universities. At the end of the season, an overall winner will be named. American Honda will donate $3,000 to Rice's general scholarship fund in LaRocca's name.

LaRocca, a senior, sustained a career-ending foot injury this season in a game against Texas Tech University.

1994 graduate Dana Hogan has been honored with the "Hitachi Promise of Tomorrow" teaching scholarship.

The award is given to 67 students who play for a Collegiate Footballl Association and are planning a career in education. Hogan was a cornerback on last year's football team, appearing in all 11 games.
