SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Men's golf finishes 12th
Stanford University, the top-ranked team in the nation, ran away with the tournament. The Cardinal were led by Tiger Woods, who captured the individual title. They were 30 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher, the University of Kansas.
Rice's top finisher was junior John Lawrence. His consistency over the three rounds (74-73-74) led him to a 13th-place finish.
Sophomore Kalani Kiaaina continues to improve his game. He claimed the team's second-best finish for the second time this year with a score of 76-71-77--224.
Tim Carlson, who hadn't finished lower than second on the team this year, was one stroke behind Kiaaina (77-75-73). Senior David Lawrence placed fourth with a 78-76-79--233.
Regarding the teams performance, Head Coach Jim Castañeda said, "David Lawrence was quite ill and didn't play the way he normally plays. That hurt us. However, we were only five strokes out of eighth."
