NEWS IN BRIEF: Alternative spring break

A group of 19 Rice students will be traveling to Honduras this spring break to work with Habitat for Humanity. The students, who will be accompanied by a Chemistry Department staff member, will help build houses for needy families.

The trip is part of the Rice Student Volunteer Program's annual "Alternative Spring Break." Another group of students will be working with Habitat for Humanity crews in Jacksonville, Fl.

Following last year's successful trip to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a larger group of students wants to repeat the experience this year.

The group will live in the community and work with others from the area, learning about the culture and the people.

Since the inception of the Rice chapter of Habitat for Humanity in 1993, students have helped the Houston chapter complete 15 houses. The Rice chapter works every Saturday, providing volunteers with the tools and knowledge to build houses.

The projected cost of this year's trip is $713 per person, bringing the total cost of the trip to $14,260. The cost will cover transportation, housing, food and a donation to Habitat for Humanity Honduras.

RSVP is raising money in an attempt to reduce the cost to $250 per person.

Fund-raising has already begun and donations will be accepted through February.
