Rice faces Vanderbilt in Nashville
Nate Reinking led the way for Kent (3-0) with 25 points, including 16 in the second half. D.J. Bosse added 19 points off the bench.
Tommy McGhee, who has surpassed the 20-point mark in three of four games this season, recorded 28 points for Rice.
Shaun Igo contributed 16 points, and Robert Johnson added 10 points.
After Johnson's three-pointer gave Rice a 21-11 lead with 10:08 to go in the first half, Kent rallied with ten straight points of their own, including eight by Bosse, to tie the game.
Kent edged into the lead early in the second half, and after a McGhee three-pointer cut their lead to 58-55 at the 5:39 mark, they responded by scoring the next seven points to take control.
Similar to what occured in a narrow home-court victory over the University of North Texas earlier in the week, the Owls were hurt by sloppy play.
They turned the ball over 19 times and shot only 35.9 percent in the decisive second half.
Rice hosted Kansas University, ranked first in the nation by the Associated Press, last night. The game was nationally-televised by ESPN2.
The Owls travel to Nashville tomorrow to take on Vanderbilt University.
The Commodores (5-1) enter the game on a five-game winning streak, including a 61-48 upset of 15th-ranked University of Virginia.
After tomorrow's game, the Owls will be idle until Dec. 21 when they host Dartmouth University.
St. Bonaventure University is the next opponent, visting Autry court on Dec. 23.
