SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Volleyball goes 1-3 at NIVCs

by Jun Yang

The women's volleyball's breakthrough season has finally ended. In its first playoff appearance, the Owls exited the National Invitational Volleyball Championship last weekend in four matches.

Rice's lack of playoff experience quickly showed as the University of Rhode Island pounded the Owls 15-9, 15-13, 15-3.

Senior Sammy Waldron provided the offensive sparks with 13 kills.

Rice was not the only team Rhode Island dominated as it ran over the whole pool to advance to the Final Four of the tournament.

The second opponent, Pepper-dine University, spent much more effort in defeating Rice, winning in four games, 15-4, 13-15, 15-12, 19-17.

Waldron had 26 kills, 15 digs and five blocks. Equally impressive were freshman swing hitter Lisa Sweeney with 15 kills.

Rice fell to 0-3 in the NIVC tournament when it faltered against Kansas State University's balanced attack in four games, 15-7, 8-15, 11-15 and 11-15.

The tournament ended on a positive note as Rice convincingly put away Drake University in straight sets, 15-13, 15-8, 15-12.

The tournament marked the end of the career of the SWC's all-time kill leader Sammy Waldron.
