SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Soccer title taken away
The team lacked a full squad at the three seeding games and only gained one point to be seeded sixth going into the tournament games.
Once the tournament began though, the team turned around.
Midfielder Mike Eggen came through for the team and was able to score his first two goals of the season.
The Lads beat Sam Houston State University 4-0, leading to a semifinal match against Texas Tech University.
The Texas Tech game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play. The Lads were able to then score in overtime to secure the win.
Again Eggen shone, scoring both goals for Rice.
Saturday afternoon the Lads found themselves facing the University of Texas in the finals.
An early goal by Eggen for Rice was soon answered by UT to keep the game tied through overtime and into a shootout.
The Lads made four out of the five penalty kicks to defeat UT.
Shortly afterwards, Rice's captain was approached by tournament officials regarding an ineligible player. Rice's champion status was taken away and UT was given first place.
