$875,000 Gates?
Facilities and Engineering is waiting for approval from the Board of Directors before they proceed with the building of permanent gates at all of the entrances.
The projected cost of the gates has increased significantly as plans have been revised and improved. Paul Sanders, the staff architect in charge of the project, said that F&E originally estimated that the gates would cost about $175,000. According to Bill Mack, the director of F&E, the estimate has been increased to $875,000.
The gates were designed by members of the Rice staff with the help of the Campus Police and the architectural firm Sasaki Associates from Watertown, Mass.
Mack said they are hoping to get approval for the additional funding from the board in mid-March and begin work this summer. Construction will then take between eight and 12 months to complete. Rice decided to build the gates last April in response to security concerns on campus.
