LETTER: Amnesty International needs student support
To the editor:
On Feb. 9 and 10, an important conference will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel on the theme of "China, the U.S. and Asia."
Members of Amnesty International will be there to ensure that full attention is paid to an issue of major importance: the grim hu- man rights situation in China.
The case of an imprisoned Chinese journalist, Yu Dongyue, will be one of the cases highlighted at the conference by Amnesty.
Mr. Yu is serving a 20-year sentence for taking part in the pro-democracy demonstrations held at Tienanmen Square in 1989.
Amnesty believes he has been jailed and tortured by the Chinese government for exercising his right to freedom of expres- sion.
Please contact the Rice University student group of Amnesty International to learn how you can help win the freedom of Yu Dongyue and other victims of injustice.
