LETTER: Lanier should receive credit for SOAR

by Sarah Burnett

To the editor:

I understand that it is often difficult to determine who should be given the lion's share of credit for new activities and programs to which many faculty, staff and student contribute ( Thresher , Jan. 19), but I wish to point out that the Student Organized Against Rape program was started by Cynthia Lanier, director of the Office of Health Education, and continues under the auspices of her office.

Lanier and the Houston Area Women's Center were jointly awarded a "Leadership in Action" Award in 1991 for that innovative and successful program which educates groups of students both on and off campus.

Furthermore, the various educational programs known as Alcohol Awareness Week, AIDS Awareness Week and Sexual Assault Awareness Week were also started by Lanier, who organizes the many activities that take place in those weeks.

The members of the Rice Counseling Center, the Student Health Service and I have actively participated in and supported these for initiating and leading them.

These and the many other educational programs sponsored by the Office of Health and Education continue to address the many health issues important to students and contribute positively to the quality of student life on this campus.

Sarah A. Burnett

Dean of Students
