EDITORIAL: FALSE SECURITY

Despite arrest, area still is not safe.

Kudos are in order for the Campus Police and all the officers for their excellent work in arresting a suspect in the recent sexual assault cases in a timely manner. The same cannot be said for Rice students.

Upon hearing Monday night that an arrest had been made in the assaults case, the phrase, "Whew, I feel safe again," was too commonly heard. What does it take for Rice students to WAKE UP? Does someone have to get murdered on this campus for students to stop falling for the same old false sense of security that comes with the hedges? What's even more amazing is that the person who people saw being arrested was free on Monday night as a result of a lack of identifying witnesses.

Where's your security now? But that's not even the point: Rice students need to be more aware of their surroundings; they need to take advantage of all of the crime prevention programs available from the Campus Police. The simple fact is that this campus is not safe, and it never will be. No matter what safety precautions the university takes, assaults and other crimes will occur. It's a fact of life. So, be aware of your surroundings, call the escort cart for a ride or call the Campus Police for a ride home. The simple things will save your life.
