SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Rice has strong showing in Houston Tenneco Marathon

Four former Rice athletes turned in top performances in last Saturday's marathon.

Former track and tennis athlete Sean Wade finished fourth overall in the men's division with a time of 2:10:59.

The time was good enough to qualify him for the Atlanta Olympics for his native New Zealand.

Riva Rahl, a 1995 graduate and former distance and cross country runner, placed second in the 20-24 age group with a time of 3:16:36. Rahl currently attends medical school in California.

Freshman Ellen Lansden came in second in the under-19 age group with a time of 3:38:56. It was her third Houston marathon and her personal best time.

Jeff Wells, a 1974 All-American distance runner for the Owls, placed fourth among Americans and fourth in the 40-49 group in 2:29:16.
