NEWS IN BRIEF: Jordan's life to be honored

by George Hatoun

The Sociology Department will honor former Houston Congresswoman Barbara Jordan in an event scheduled for Wednesday, the day she was to speak at Rice.

The event, to be held at 8 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Student Center, will feature many prominent local figures, including the Rev. Bill Lawson of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, former Texas Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby, Texas Southern University Sociology Professor Cecile Harrison and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), who holds Jordan's former House seat.

In December, Jordan ac-cepted the Sociology Department's invitation to give its annual Walter and Helen Hall lecture.

But Jordan, the first black elected to Congress from the South since Reconstruction, died Jan. 17 in Austin. She gained national fame during the 1974 Watergate hearings.

"We have invited extraordinary people, black and white -- all of whom knew her -- as speakers who will give very brief encomiums or reminiscences," Sociology Professor Chandler Davidson said.
