LETTER: O-Week plans, jacks proposal available

by Glenn Levy

To the editor:

I hope to clarify some of the issues surrounding the Orientation Review Report.

To begin with, copies of the report are available in each college office for student review. In addition, the report is on-line (http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~glenno/review.html) .

I encourage anyone with an opinion about the report to inform themselves of its content by reading any relevant sec- tions.

In addition, I wanted to mention one of the larger changes in the report.

In order to facilitate a better understanding of the job of Coordinator, all candidates who are interviewing or running for election are required to read, sign and submit to Dr. Camacho a copy of a Coordinator job description and list of responsibilities prior to being designated to the position.

These job descriptions are available both in the colleges and Dr. Camacho's offices.

Furthermore, I am encouraged by the ongoing discourse over the issue of jacks.

People are becoming more informed about the issues related to jacks, and I know that O-Week cannot help but be better as a result of the debate.

As the Thresher should report today, the final version of the proposal recommends a one-year hiatus from jacks but allows for the decision to be made by next year's coordinators.

At the same time, I hope that people will also examine other parts of the report (especially the "O-Week 2000" ideas), for it would be unfortunate if jacks are the only issue which people feel is worth discus- sing.

Finally, I hope that anyone who has concerns or questions will contact either myself (630-8280 or glenno@rice.edu ) or Steve Sutton (527-4096 or ssutton@ruf.rice.edu ).

As co-chairs of the review process, we are both in a good position to answer questions and gather more input from students.
