SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Lacrosse opens season with loss to Texas, win over SWT

The men's lacrosse team went 1-1 last weekend as the Owls lost to the University of Texas but defeated Southwest Texas State University in overtime.

On Saturday in Austin, the team relied on Co-Captain Joey Olivier's five goals to keep the match close through most of the game.

However, the Longhorns' pressure offense was too much for Rice to handle as the Owls lost 14-7.

Although Texas was ahead for most of the game, Rice played its starters for the entire match in what senior midfielder John Hunter said was an attempt to create a "learning experience."

The Owls had payback on their minds as they traveled to San Marcos to take on Southwest Texas University.

However, Rice looked weary at times before winning 8-7 in overtime. Co-Captain Andy Doran scored the deciding goal.

Rice's game against Stephen F. Austin State University tomorrow was postponed to a later date.
