NEWS IN BRIEF: Outreach symposium

The Rice Pre-Medical Society will host a Global Outreach Symposium from 2 to 5 p.m. today in the Grand Hall of the Student Center.

The aim of the symposium will be to broaden the perspectives of the Rice community with regard to practicing medicine as well as to show students the importance of providing health care to those who do not ordinarily have access to medical services.

The conference will consist of three panels of speakers who regularly go beyond their normal call of duty as health care professionals to volunteer their talents to help people.

The conference will be divided into three hour-long discussions: local, national and international outreach. Speakers include an open-heart surgeon who performs surgery for Guatemalans free of charge, workers from Houston clinics and physicians who travel to the U.S.-Mexico border, Armenia and Sarajevo to administer services.

Students and faculty may come and go as they please throughout the conference.
