SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Lacrosse wins two games
This weekend, the Rice lacrosse team improved its record to 3-1 with wins over Trinity University and Stephen F. Austin State University.
A large crowd witnessed a first-half runaway on Saturday as Rice jumped to a 7-0 lead over Trinity. The large number of penalties in the second half slowed the play, and the game ended with Rice winning 12-3.
"It was great," senior midfielder John Hunter said. "We kicked butt, and I got more playing time than I thought I deserved."
Against SFA on Sunday, Rice again jumped to an early lead in front of the home crowd. Solid defense allowed for the 9-3 halftime score to be extended to a 15-4 final.
Fifth-year midfielder Mark Stugart earned the game ball with one goal, three assists and several fast breaks that wore down the SFA defense.
During the game, junior co-captain Andy Doran was slashed across the helmet and required medical attention.
An ambulance brought him to the hospital where x-rays proved negative.
"I feel pretty good," Doran said. "My neck is a little stiff, and I've been drooling uncontrollably, but I'll be fine soon."
Both Harry Moren and Jeff Darlington played well in goal as the Rice defense allowed only seven goals in eight quarters this weekend.
Remaining home games for Rice include a Feb. 25 matchup against the men's club team Metro, and the regular season finale on Mar. 23 against rival Texas A&M University. The winner of that contest will advance to the Southwest Lacrosse Association Collegiate Championship Tournament.
