SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Women's rugby club continues its winning ways

The Rice women's rugby club defeated Texas A&M University for the third time this year, 12-10.

The game began slowly for Rice with the Aggies scoring the first try, but the Owls responded with a weak side try by sophomore rookie fullback Megan Moir. It was her first try for Rice.

Another sophomore rookie, Mara Monoski, assisted the try with a well-timed pass from five meters out.

The Aggies began the second half with another unconverted try.

Junior and club president Heather-Michelle Stewart tied the score with a 70-meter run to the center of the try zone.

Moir kicked the game-winning conversion.

Although Texas A&M threatened to score again with five minutes left in the game, the Owls' forward pack held them off at the try line for the remainder of the game.

The team will travel to New Orleans this weekend for a Mardi Gras tournament and will play at home against Texas A&M Feb. 24 at noon on the rugby field.
