Noted bridge designer to speak at Rice
Renowned bridge designer T. Y. Lin, professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley and chairman of Lin Tung-Yen China Inc., will speak on "Creativity in Civil Engineering" at the Civil Engineering Department's Ryon Symposium on March 29 in Fondren Library.
Lin's works include numerous spans as well as the roof structure of the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, the largest underground room in the world. Among his unbuilt
designs are a bridge from Alaska to Siberia and a five-mile wide span over
the Straits of Gibraltar.
The symposium, named after former Civil Engineering Department Chair Lewis B. Ryon, will focus on civil engineering in the 21st century. Other guests include professors from Rice, Texas A&M University, Purdue University and Carnegie-Mellon University as well as leaders of several engineering firms, including the chief engineer of Houston-based Brown & Root Inc.
The symposium will be held in the Kyle Morrow Room in Fondren Library. Seminars (8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30-4:30 p.m.) are free for the Rice community; Lin's dinner talk is free, but dinner costs $35. Anybody interested in attending should contact the Civil Engineering Department.
