Pictured above is Soumitra Lahiri, who is among those artists appearing on the bill at this weekendÕs Fifth Annual KTRU Outdoor Concert on the Rice campus Saturday at noon. Lahiri, from Calcutta, is currently on his first U.S. tour. His sitar-playing style is described as mixing the vigor and majesty of the dhrupad-based Vishnupur Gharana (who began teaching Lahiri at age six) with the lyrical romanticism of Nikhil Banerjee and the measured grace of the vocal style of Ustad Amir Khan. Also featured will be the art-pop of Austin musician Kathy McCarty and the experimental jazz of Arthur Doyle, as well as skilled local bands Jessica Six, Project Grimm and Ultra Hummus as well as Furry Things from Austin.

For more outdoor fun this weekend, check out the Westheimer Street Festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday on the 100 to 1000 blocks of Westheimer. It features, for the first time ever, a medieval combat exhibition at the Medieval Village, which will also simulate aspects of medieval life other than warfare. At two stages set up at the 500 and 800 blocks of Westheimer, a number of acts including a professional skateboard team and a number of musical acts. These include Beat Temple (who played NOD this year), The Limos, Guest, Tammy Taylor, Hi-Rize, Hightailers, Carolyn Wonderland, Sunflower, The Zone and others. Call 522-6545 for more information.
