NEWS IN BRIEF: Mellon minorities honored
The Mellon Minority Undergraduate Fellowship Program introduced its new fellows and honored its graduates at its annual banquet at the Farnsworth Pavilion Tuesday night.
Faculty, staff and students who were involved in the program were in attendance, as well as President Malcolm Gillis, Vice President for Student Affairs Zenaido Camacho and Provost David Auston.
Gillis offered his reflections on the program, recognizing the work of program coordinator and History Professor Edward Cox and the fellows. He talked about the problems of underrepresentation in academia that MMUFP was designed to address. He also used the opportunity to praise the Hispanic Association for Cultural Enrichment at Rice and the Black Student Association for their efforts in protest of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals' decision against affirmative action.
Auston presented awards to the fellows, and the graduating students individually thanked their mentors and talked about their experiences in the the two-year program.
The new Mellon fellows for 1996 are Kathleen Cantú; Marsha Elliott, a Jones College sophomore; Melina Farve, a Wiess College sophomore; and Ahmad Hernandez and Armanda Lewis, Brown College sophomores.
