Campus Police participates in campaign to prevent car theft

The Campus Police, in cooperation with the Houston Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, will be participating in the Help End Auto Theft campaign.

The voluntary registration program is designed to permit law enforcement officers to stop vehicles displaying the H.E.A.T. (Help End Auto Theft) or C.H.A.T. (Combat Houston Auto Theft) decal between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. to verify ownership. This also allows officers at the Mexico border to confirm ownership before the vehicle leaves the United States.

To participate, come by the Rice Police Department on April 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and bring your driver's license, proof of insurance and either the vehicle title or registration along with the vehicle. For a registration fee of 1 cent, which will be donated to the Texas Auto Theft Prevention Authority, a program registration form will be completed and a C.H.A.T. decal will be provided to the owner to apply to the vehicle.

Registration information will be entered into the statewide data base for law enforcement's referral. This program has been extremely effective throughout the state in both theft deterrence and law enforcement's capability to recover stolen vehicles. To enroll in the program or if you have any questions concerning auto theft prevention, stop by the Rice Police Dept. on the 24th.
