NEWS IN BRIEF: Sloan Research Fellowship honors physics professor
Physics Associate Professor Qimiao Si was recently awarded a two-year, $35,000 fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Si was chosen from a nominee pool of over 400 scientists. The 100 winners from this year, who hail from 54 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada, are now free to continue researching their primary interests.
The foundation chooses "young scientists in the early stages of their careers on the basis of their exceptional promise to contribute to the advancement of knowledge" in physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, neuroscience and economics. Since 1955, the program has spent over $72 million in support of 3,100 scientists, 19 of whom have later been awarded Nobel prizes. Candidates are nominated by department chairs and other senior scholars.
