NEWS IN BRIEF: Newly appointed dean of Social Sciences recovers from surgery
Newly appointed Dean of Social Sciences Robert Stein is at home recovering after his release from Memorial South Hospital on Wednesday morning, where he was diagnosed with appendicitis and had his appendix removed.
After cycling 50 miles as his Sunday morning workout, Stein said he felt an acute pain in his stomach.
"I thought it was just indigestion, but it became worse after I got off the bike, so when my wife came to pick me up ... we went straight to the emergency room, where I found out it was appendicitis," Stein said.
The emergency room was full, and Stein was told that he would have to wait several hours before being seen. He went home and waited until Monday morning when he went to Memorial South.
"The anesthesiologist, who was actually 134th District State Representative Kyle Janicke, put me under at 1:30 p.m., and I was out [of sedation] by 5:30 p.m. Everything went fine. I was lucky it didn't burst." Stein said.
Prohibited from eating for 48 hours, Stein stayed in the hospital two nights before he was allowed soup and a turkey sandwich Wednesday morning. He was released soon afterward.
"I won't be able to drive or ride my bike for at least two weeks, but I'll certainly be back bright and early Monday morning," Stein said.
Stein also added that papers are still due in all of his classes.
