Lamy, Welch get top honors at banquet
The "R" Association, Rice's letterwinners organization, presented the annual Rice Athletic Awards Presentation at Autry Court Sunday evening.
The most prestigous honors of the night were awarded to seniors Jay Lamy and Holly Welch.
Lamy's work at defensive back for the football team earned him the Bob Quin Award, which is given to Rice's outstanding senior male athlete.
Welch won the Joyce Pounds Hardy Award, awarded to the Owl's top female student-athlete, for her middle distance running for the track team.
Most valuable awards for 1995-96 were also awarded in all varsity sports.
Sammy Waldron was voted the most valuable volleyball player.
Football's most valuable athlete was Larry Izzo.
Tammy McCallum was the most valuable women's basketball player, as Tom McGhee earned the award for the men's team.
In swimming, Ginny Farmer and Steve Quance were selected as recepients of the award.
Efe Ustundag got recognized for his tennis prowess, as Olga Limon was given the award for women's tennis.
Track athletes selected for the award were Stacy Swank and Valerie Tulloch for the women and Cliff Alexander and Ivory Angello for the men's team.
David Lawrence was awarded the most valuable golf player for Rice's team.
Regina Cavanaugh-Murphy was the night's featured speaker.
Cavanaugh-Murphy was a six-time NCAA shot put champion for the Owls and is now a physician in Houston.
