THE Thresher 's recommendations for events around Houston this week ...

THURSDAY

HOUSTON BALLET

The Houston Ballet kicks off its 1996-97 season with a tribute to George Balanchine, a legendary figure in 20th century dance. The program features three one-act ballets, the highlight being his 1957 masterpiece, Agon .

7:30 p.m., Brown Theater, Wortham Center

(713) 523-6300

THURSDAY

THE DRAG

Performing at the Urban Art Bar in promotion of their new album, this modern rock band creates music that is much more expressive and artistic than most others in the genre. However, don't think that artistic nature sacrifices their ability to rock. Up-and-coming bands such as the Drag can frequently be seen at the Urban Art Bar for a relatively low price. Highly recommended.

112 Milam

Call the venue for showtime.

SUNDAY

STING

A rare chance to see one of the most dynamic rock artists of all time in concert. He will be performing in promotion of his new album, Mercury Falling .

Sting has mastered a wide range of sounds over the years from reggae influences to rock to near-country on "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying."

The former lead singer for the Police will also undoubtedly perform many of his past hits including ... well, the whole Fields of Gold: Greatest Hits album as well as the past Police hits such as "Every Breath You Take" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger."

Opening for Sting are Jars of Clay, best known for their recent hit single "Flood."

8 p.m.,

Woodlands Pavillion
