BEYOND THE HEDGES: Free e-mail, almost no strings

Juno Online Services, L.P. began providing free Internet e-mail services to the general public in April.

Members get basic e-mail functions, an address book, mail storage, spell-check and local access numbers around the country; when no local number is available, an 800 number is provided. The service is an option "of particular interest" for those who are accustomed to free e-mail services but who no longer have access to it, like recent college graduates.

Juno was organized and funded by D.E. Shaw & Co., a firm founded in 1988 by David E. Shaw, formerly a professor in Columbia University's Computer Science Department. It earns money by selling advertisers space that will appear within a discrete portion of the screen (a horizontal banner in the upper right hand corner) as well as in a separate window that appears when members upload or download their mail. Online market research and optional billable services create additional revenue for the company.

Juno's software, which runs on any PC with Microsoft Windows and a modem, can be requested by calling 1-800-654-JUNO or sending e-mail to signup@juno.com .
