COLUMN: Upcoming weeks will test mettle of political clubs
ABORTION, BALANCED
budget, family values,
underaged smoking, smoking but not inhaling, bad hair, new cure for insomnia --
yup, sounds like Election Day is just around the corner. But here at Rice, you
wouldn't really know it by picking up its official student newspaper.
In fact, sometimes you wouldn't even know that there are students here who care about political issues at all.
But I know there are. As I browse through the list of clubs registered with the Office of Student Activities, I see several clubs which claim to be politically concerned: Rice Republicans, Rice Young Democrats, Rice for Life, Rice for Choice, etc.
As the impending fall elections inspire increasingly more tabloids, a few worthwhile issues are bound to arise. These are issues which voting citizens will need to be educated and informed about.
If Rice political clubs are the champions of the causes they claim to be, let them prove it here in the Thresher . No holds barred. We, the voters, will be listening.
