TONIGHT
It's a back-to-back feature of two science fiction classics: War of the Worlds and Invasion of the Body Snatchers at the Rice Media Center .
The opener will be H.G. Well's novel about an invasion of Earth by Martians in 1950s California. This movie features some of the best special effects of the time. This is the first version where the famous stingray-shaped in-vaders' crafts replaced Wells' original concept of tripod spaceships. The movie is to be shown in 35 mm print film.
The latter film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers , (to begin at 9:10) features a strange occurrence in a small town, where people are slowly being replaced by emotionless beings. It has been claimed that this movie is a metaphor for 1950s American culture as well as Communist paranoia.
War of the Worlds begins at 7:30 p.m. and Invasion of the Body Snatchers at 9:10 p.m.
